Luke 10:38-42 (NKJV)
Now it
happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman
named Martha welcomed Him into her
house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. 40 But
Martha was distracted with much
serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that
my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried
and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has
chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:38-42 (NLT)
As
Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a
certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her
sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening
to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was
preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you
that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and
help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset
over all these details! There is
only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it
will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:38-42 (MSG)
As
they continued their travel, Jesus entered a village. A woman by the name of
Martha welcomed him and made him feel quite at home. She had a sister, Mary, who sat before the Master, hanging on every word
he said. But Martha was pulled away by all she had to do in the kitchen.
Later, she stepped in, interrupting them. “Master, don’t you care that my
sister has abandoned the kitchen to me? Tell her to lend me a hand.” The Master
said, “Martha, dear Martha, you’re
fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing
only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it’s the main course, and
won’t be taken from her.”
Luke 10:38-42 (AMP)
Now
while they were on their way, Jesus entered a village [called Bethany], and a
woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet
and was continually listening to His teaching. But Martha was very busy and distracted with all of her serving
responsibilities; and she approached Him and said, “Lord, is it of no
concern to You that my sister has left me to do the serving alone? Tell her to
help me and do her part.” But the Lord replied to her, “Martha, Martha,
you are worried and bothered and anxious
about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part [that which is to her advantage],
which will not be taken away from her.”
1.
Lord, thank You for coming into my life
and making it Your house, the place where You want to express Yourself fully (Hebrews 3:6). Even though You have moved into a house that needs to be
decluttered of the remains of the old tenant, You are faithful in seeing me
through this process. Thank You Lord, for Your manifold mercies.
2.
Lord, You have come into my life with Your
own agenda. I may have welcomed You into my life, but You have come in with
something that You want accomplished. Help me to set aside my own ideas and
agendas and surrender to Yours.
3.
Lord, like Mary, help me to make the
deliberate and intentional decision to sit
down; to settle down with You for
these my ‘50 days’ so that I can be completely and quickly decluttered and made
ready for You to fully occupy my life. Help me to understand that unless I sit down now, I may miss the opportunity of Your work of Grace in my life.
4.
Father, please help me not be distracted
at this time, not even by things that may seem needful. Lord, show me that
everything else is nothing compared to the need for me to sit down with You NOW. Help me to understand that all You need from
me right now is my full cooperation, consent and attention.
5.
Lord, help me to handle those who may
object to my sitting down with You at
this time. Speak up for me and cover for me with those who are dear to me by
want to distract me from sitting down
with You.
6.
Lord, deliver me from distracted distractors.
Don’t let me be sucked into someone else’s distractions no matter how well meaning
they may be.
7.
Lord, help me to value sitting down with You over any other
thing in my life right now, even if it means risking valued relationships.
8. Lord,
I have come into Your school of grace. Please me to take the posture of an
acute learner, an intentional learner and not that of a distracted learner who
is pulled away by other priorities.
